When you lead authentically, you relate to others and lead from your true self not masked by organizational politics, looking good, winning approval, etc. As an authentic leader you take tough stands, bring up the “un-discussibles” (risky issues the group avoids discussing), openly deal with relationship problems, and share personal feelings/vulnerabilities about a situation.

Being authentic means being who you are and acting with integrity according to your values. It also means

  • being willing to establish a high level of integrity in your communication,
  • expressing feelings honestly
  • providing direct feedback without backing away from conflict.

When we’re not authentic we engage in protecting behaviours and may present as distant, critical and/or arrogant.  Which kind of leader do you want to be?

If you want to enhance your authenticity

  • engage in difficult conversations
  • try being more assertive
